DIY Easter Advent Calendar

It’s never too soon to embrace the Easter season and begin counting down the sleeps! A DIY Easter advent calendar will do just the trick. December had the right idea with the advent calendar – a little gift every day – but why save all the enjoyment for Christmastime?

Crafting advent calendars for Easter may not be a forethought, but we can guarantee your kids’ excitement will be at its peak. And since we had heaps of fun making advent calendars last Christmas, we couldn’t possibly turn down an opportunity to make them again. Limiting all your Easter gifts and fun to just Easter Sunday is a thing of the past, so we’re excited to share this fantastic DIY advent calendar with an Easter twist.

You’re guaranteed to already have most of the supplies at home, making this project an exciting activity you don’t have to leave the house for!

What you’ll need:

Egg carton (6 or 12, depending how many days you want to count down)

Toilet rolls (same amount as the egg carton)

Felt pens, paint, glue, Easter egg wrappers, pom poms, excess cardboard, ribbons, and any other craft supplies you may have

Mini chocolate eggs

Instructions:

  1. Place cuts in the toilet paper rolls. View the video from Be a Fun Mum to make sure you use the correct technique.
  2. Now you have an “egg”, it’s time to decorate! Use felt pens, egg wrappers, glitter, pom poms, or paint.
  3. Fill the egg with favours (see our ideas below for inspiration).
  4. Place the pointy side down in the egg carton.
  5. Make number labels for the flat side of the egg. You can cutout cardboard or EVA foam squares with a number stuck on each, or simply use a permanent marker and paper.
  6. Glue or sticky tape the number labels on top, remembering to keep it secure but also easy for little hands to access.

Make the outsides of the eggs even more festive with bunny cutouts or stickers adhered. Another fun alternative is to purchase plastic fillable eggs and decorate with leftover Easter egg wrappers or paint. The best part is – a DIY advent Easter calendar is only limited to a child’s imagination.

Once the Easter countdown has finished, simply store away, ready for next Easter. Or feel inspired to assemble a Christmas version later in the year.

DIY Easter Advent Calendar: Filling Ideas for Toddlers and Children

Obviously, the most commonly requested filling by children is understandably chocolate. But if you’d prefer your children not to consume small amounts chocolate over 12 days, followed by 1 day of copious consumption, there are many other enjoyable filler ideas.

Pom poms: Use some scrap paper or offcuts to write a DIY task idea on. Place this slip of paper inside the eggs in conjunction with pom poms. When the child opens this day’s egg, they’ll be treated with a craft activity featuring pom poms! For added fun, include googly eyes in this egg too.

Nail polish: We all know Easter calls for a pastel colour palette and glitter. So, channel their festive creativity into their (and your) nails.

Toys: Include dolls clothing, matchbox cars, bouncy balls, or mini figurines over a couple of days to keep the kids’ boredom at bay (for a few minutes – at least).

DIY Easter Advent Calendar: Filling Ideas for Older Children and the Young-at-Heart

These DIY Easter advent calendars aren’t just customary for the littlest members of the family. Encourage older children to embrace the joy of Easter by creating their own.

Money: Perfect for the older kids who want to join in on the Easter fun. Each day could consist of a different denomination, from coins to bills. Another idea to keep the young-at-heart happy is to print an e-gift card and fold it to fit.

Goodwill Easter calendar: Popular at Christmastime, random acts of kindness, or goodwill, calendars are also a wonderful idea for Easter. And these goodwill ideas don’t have to be anything extravagant, either. Ideas such as as saying “hi” to someone they normally wouldn’t talk to or helping around the house are simple, yet effective.

Mindfulness messages or affirmations: As the hustle and bustle of daily life goes, sometimes we all need a gentle reminder to slow down and stop for a moment. You can write mindful tips or affirmations on pieces of paper and slip inside the egg. Or write a short message on the outside to make their day even more wonderful. The Christmas Cart has collated Beautiful Christmas Memories with Inspiring Advent Calendar Ideas that could definitely be useful for Easter.

Treats: Of course, chocolate and confectionary aren’t just for children. Sweeten a tween or teenager’s day with their favourite delicacies added to some (or all) of the eggs.

This DIY Easter advent calendar is a joyful additional way to help bring excitement to each day prior to Easter. Give all the kids something exciting to wake up to every morning so the entire household can truly embrace the spirit of Easter.
